Product FAQ

How do I know this crankshaft fits my car?

Match it by engine code first, not just make/model — the same vehicle model could have been sold with several different engine designs over different years, and the same engine code can sometimes still have different crankshaft variants (stroke, journal sizes, balancing, flange, keyway). Compare your old crankshaft against the listing photos and read the listing notes carefully — some cranks are shared across related codes, so check for any note confirming cross-fitment. If anything doesn't line up or you're not sure, contact us on WhatsApp with your engine code, or a picture of the license disc, and photos and we will assist with compatibility confirmation.

Where do I find my engine code?

In South Africa, it's usually the first 4 (or more) characters in the engine number (in some vehicles this may not be the case), and is either stamped on the block, printed on a sticker or stamped on a plate under the bonnet. See our guide with photos: https://www.sharpautoparts.co.za/pages/where-to-find-the-engine-code

What material is this crankshaft made of?

Unless otherwise stated, it is made of cast iron. Forged steel crankshafts are labelled as such.

Are your crankshafts heat treated?

Yes, all our crankshafts are heat treated during the manufacturing process.

Why do some crankshafts have a brownish-gold coating?

That's Tectyl — a wax-based anti-rust coating applied during manufacturing or shipping to protect the bare metal from moisture and corrosion in transit and storage. It's not a defect or sign the part has been used — just clean it off with a suitable solvent before fitting.

What size bearings should I buy for my crankshaft?

All our crankshafts are factory cut to standard size, therefore, you must buy standard bearings and not oversized bearings.

Is this crankshaft balanced, and does it need to be rebalanced with my rods/pistons?

Yes, factory balanced. Your mechanic must still check and confirm balance before installing — that's a standard part of correct fitment, not optional.

What condition are the crankshaft journals in — do they need machining?

We only sell new crankshafts, machined to standard size. Your mechanic must still check and confirm condition before installing, same as with any part going into an engine.

Can this crankshaft be used for racing?

Only crankshafts specifically marketed as performance are made to racing spec. We don't currently sell racing-spec crankshafts.

On the flywheel side, I see a difference in the number of flywheel holes — why?

Some engine codes have crankshafts with different designs, meaning a different number of bolt-mounting flywheel holes. Sometimes, though, a dowel hole gets mistaken for a bolt-mounting hole. Our crankshafts don't come with dowels, so in the listing photos you may see what looks like an extra hole — that's the dowel hole. When counting the holes on your old flywheel, if you see a dowel fitted, count that position as a hole on our crankshaft too. We'll also note in each listing how many bolt-mounting holes and how many dowel holes there are.

What's your warranty on crankshafts?

Standard cover is 6 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first, provided the crank is installed by a qualified mechanic or RMI-approved workshop and correct lubrication (oil grade and pressure) is confirmed at fitment. Passenger-for-reward, emergency/response, driving-school and rental/hire vehicles get 30 days or 10,000km instead — must be declared at time of quote.
