How do I know if this cylinder head is for my car?
Match it by engine code first, not just make/model — the same vehicle model could have been sold with several different engine designs over different years, and the same engine code can sometimes still have different cylinder head variants. Your engine code, in South Africa, is usually the first 4 (or more) characters in the engine number (in some vehicles this may not be the case), or is either stamped on the block, printed on a sticker or stamped on a plate under the bonnet. Once you've confirmed the code, compare your old cylinder head against the listing photos and read the listing notes carefully — some cylinder heads have known variants (for example with or without a camshaft carrier) that are called out there. If anything doesn't line up or you're not sure, contact us on WhatsApp with your engine code, or a picture of the license disc, and photos and we will assist with compatibility confirmation.
Does this cylinder head need to be skimmed before I fit it?
No. All the cylinder heads we sell are factory skimmed and don't need to be skimmed again before fitting. The valve seats are also factory cut, so no further machining is needed on that front either.
My old cylinder head looks different from the new one — why?
This can happen for a few reasons — some engine codes were built with more than one cylinder head design over their production run, or a previous owner or mechanic may have removed, swapped or modified parts on your old cylinder head at some point. A visual difference doesn't automatically mean the new cylinder head is wrong for your engine. Because the cause varies case by case, contact us with photos of both cylinder heads and your engine code and we'll help you work out whether it's a normal variant or something that needs a closer look.
Can I reuse parts from my old cylinder head (camshaft, carrier, caps, rockers) on the new one?
Yes, depending on the part and its condition — reuse isn't automatic just because the part looks fine. A qualified mechanic or engineer must properly inspect and measure each part before it goes back onto the new cylinder head. Valves in particular can be burnt or carbon-fouled and unsafe to reuse even if the engine was still running when it came out, and worn camshaft or carrier components can affect valve timing and clearances if reused without checking.
Should I buy a new cylinder head, or recondition my old one?
It depends on the total cost, not just the purchase price — engineering, any extra parts needed, transport, queue time at the engineer, and the cost of being without your vehicle all add up differently in each case. See our full cost comparison guide to work through it for your situation.
Are gaskets, bolts or a timing kit included with this cylinder head?
Not included unless the listing specifically states they're bundled in and sold as a set — by default these are separate purchases. In practice many customers have already bought a head gasket by the time they order a cylinder head, since oil/water mixing is usually what prompts the "burnt gasket" diagnosis in the first place. Note that gaskets and bolts are excluded from the standard parts warranty regardless of how they're purchased.
Does this cylinder head come with the valves already set/clearances adjusted?
Semi-assembled and assembled cylinder heads include the valves, and clearances are set at build. Even so, your mechanic or engineer must still carry out a pre-installation check before fitting — settings can shift in transit or handling. One detail to flag: our cylinder heads are set up cold, but some engines specify that clearances should be checked or adjusted hot — confirm which your engine calls for before you rely on the as-supplied setting.
What's your warranty on cylinder heads?
Standard cover is 6 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first, provided the cylinder head is installed by a qualified mechanic or RMI-approved workshop and the cooling, lubrication, timing, ignition, sealing and bearing components are replaced or proven to spec at fitment. If the vehicle is used for passenger transport for reward (taxi, e-hailing, shuttle, scholar transport), emergency/response use, driving-school or rental/hire, cover is 30 days or 10,000km instead — this must be declared at the time of quote.
Is there anything for me to do before installing this cylinder head?
Yes — work through our pre-installation checklist before fitting. It covers the checks (clearances, cooling, lubrication, timing, sealing and bearing components) that both confirm the cylinder head is ready to go in and are a condition of the warranty above, so skipping it can affect a claim later even if the cylinder head itself isn't at fault.
Besides the cylinder head, do I need to replace any other parts?
Almost certainly, yes. The most important step is finding the root cause of the original failure and fixing that first — fitting a new cylinder head without addressing what killed the old one (overheating, a cooling fault, a timing issue, and so on) risks damaging the new cylinder head the same way. On top of that, gaskets and bolts always need replacing as part of the job, and depending on what you find, other components (cooling, timing, sealing) may need attention too — see the warranty conditions above for what's expected to be checked or replaced at fitment.
